BULLETFACE nears release!

Looks like Bulletface will be coming out early in the fall The film is a disturbing thriller written by the very gifted Randall Fontana. Randall’s next film is to star Susan Sarandon and Michael Caine.  I feel fortunate to have had a second chance to collaborate with him. The first film we did together – Hong Kong ’97 done back in 1994 –  starred Robert Patrick, Brion James, Tim Thomerson and Andrew Divoff.

Bulletface is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. The story is set along the Mexico / California border, primarily Imperial Beach, CA. It concerns a female DEA agent, Dara Maren, who in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets herself arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana. You can guess how bad it gets in there.  While in prison, her brother is murdered by a drug lord who’s creating a new drug made of human spinal fluid with DNA altering side-effects.

Hundreds of dead bodies are turning up along the border.  Too bad the drug wasn’t tested before law enforcement and government officials got hooked on the stuff. A rogue FBI agent bribes the prison officials to let Dara out to avenge her brother’s murder as well as bring down the drug lord in ways the Feds can’t. When Dara comes out of prison, she is not the same person who went in.

The catch? She only gets a 72 hour get-out-of-jail card and must return to the prison to serve out her 20 year sentence or the rogue FBI Agent must take her place.

Victoria Maurette, who was the star of my “Left for Dead” film, plays Dara. Steven Bauer who is best known for similar genre films like “Scarface” and ‘Traffic” co-stars with the always terrific Scott Paulin, Morgan Weisser, Jenny Dare Paulin, and Eddie Velez. Its a great cast who really added the punch and sharp edges needed to bring Randall’s twisted characters to life. 1971Cine provided the gruesome effects.

The film was produced by my longtime producers Gary Schmoeller and Robert Ladesich and by Michael Najjar who produced “Left For Dead” and is a great friend and collaborator. Nelson Carpentier’s company provided the financing and support. They collectively created a wonderful environment for me to create and never pressured me to finish unless I was 100% satisfied with the film. Now I am.

Bulletface definitely pushes me into a new areas of terror and horror.  It’s not for the feint of heart. In fact the film was long delayed in post while I tried to figure out the best way to depict the prison scenes from which Bulletface derives so much of its dramatic power. Producer Joe Baile and director Howie Askins, whom I met via their just released horror film, “Devil Girl”, really pulled the prison sequences together and found the creative solution. I owe them a lot of gratitude. That the film works as well as it does is due to them.

So I’m really happy with the film. It’s horror in so many disturbing flavors and nerve wracking for me to send this film out into the world. It needs something stronger than a red band warning to all who enter the Bulletface experience.

As soon as we have the exact date and key art, I’ll post it here.
